Perceptions on sexes in early Byzantium
Summary
Collective mentalities in early Byzantium and the consecutive perceptions of sexes, as they emerge in lives of Daniel Stylites (5th ce.) and Mary of Egypt, (6th ce.), are the subject of this article. The scientific dialogue about the study of texts on saints' lives presents a particular growth the last twenty five years. The approach of these texts is particularly fertile when we examine them as genuine products of their era and not as barren instructive and ethic fabrications. To this direction contributes the localisation and the interpretation of historical elements of saints lives. This texts constitute, really, a treasure of informations for various aspects of daily life of Byzantines in the long period we call Byzantine.
